The Neighborhood Garage Sale
Every now and then my neighborhood will have a massive garage sale in which several houses will participate. We never seem to gather enough items in time to open up shop, but it always seems like tons of fun. So, last weekend, we decided to take part by shopping our neighbors' sales instead.
We started our spree a couple of hours after the event started, so we were surprised to find some treasures still left on the tables. I came home extremely excited about a few items that were beautifully designed, yet somehow overlooked.
Item One: Kids' Flower Press
I'm still not sure how anyone saw this illustration and passed it up. Before I even knew what it was, my hand was reaching for it. I thought it would look nice propped up on Vy's bookshelf, but what a bonus to find out it has an actual function! The imagery and hand-drawn type really capture the innocence and liveliness of kids and nature.
In addition to being a fun activity to do with Vy, the press introduced me to the French company Moulin Roty. As mentioned in my previous post about Janod, I am enchanted by well-designed kid brands, because they appeal to both the mother and designer in me. Bonjour Petit is the official US online store for Moulin Roty, so check it out if you are looking for cute toys or baby clothes. The same flower press is also available there. I've never had much interest in flowers, but now I'm looking forward to seeing what we can create with our little press.
Item Two: Vintage Playing Cards
This vintage Crazy Eights card set by Whitman has 11 different circus characters. Although I'm sure Crazy Eights is a fun game, this full set has played it's last round and will now stay safe in my inspiration pile. I am a fan of the illustration style and bright color palette that manages to stay tasteful. I think I can learn a lot and expand my skill set just from studying the details of each card.
I have seen some creative uses/suggestions for these cards, like using them as gift tags for a circus themed birthday party or transferring the illustrations onto goodie bags. I can definitely see this skating bear making an appearance at Vy's 5th birthday party as an invitation or a poster!
Item Three: Black and Gold Geometric Necklace
On one of our stops, we saw a bowl filled with necklaces. For some reason, all of them had short chains. They were too small for me, so I grabbed this gold and black one for Vy. I think it will look nice with her summer dresses. And, I can totally picture one of the Golden Girls wearing this necklace, so double win.
It's the perfect fit on her and she looks so cute! This was her first garage sale, and I think it was a success. We had such a great time, and I can't wait for the next one!
